What’s Up with Truman? 

You might’ve noticed that the blog’s header image is a picture of President Harry Truman holding up a copy of the Chicago Daily Tribune with the headline ‘Dewey Defeats Truman’. The reason I chose this picture is simple: I find it hysterical.

Of course, the Tribune’s publishers made a mistake. The headline was published on November 3, 1948 the day after Truman won an upset victory over Republican challenger Thomas Dewey, then Governor of New York, during the presidential election of that year. Two days later Truman was given a copy of the paper and held it up in joy for the photographers present.

What would’ve been Truman’s reaction if he’d read the incorrect banner headline the night of the election? My guess is that a less cheerful image would’ve made history instead.
